Today was experience that won’t soon be forgotten. We had found some birds yesterday on Brookville Lake. We had two spots in mind but decided to pull into an area on the lower portion of the lake. Half of the lake was frozen and it was 15 degrees out. We spotlighted the area as we pulled in and then heard something that sounded not right. We turned off the motor and heard people yelling for help.
As we moved closer we started seeing buckets and cushions floating. Then we saw an overturned boat and two people hanging onto it. It was a grandfather and grandson along with their dog. We pulled them out and were very concerned for them. When we pulled the grandson in his gloves were stuck to the boat and were left attached to the boat it was so cold. They’d been in the water for 30 minutes.
We were the only other boat on the lake that day. It was the first time they’d ever put in at that ramp before. Instead of idling out they ran out on plane and hit a tree. We got them back to their trucks, called the DNR office and got an ambulance to come. We went and collected all their gear and had a wrecker come to pull them out. Make sure you scout your areas ahead of time or go with someone that knows where they are going!
This is also a good time for me to remind you – wear your Onyx life jacket.
